Day 1 : Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

Early in the morning, depart Nairobi and journey south to Amboseli National Park. As you leave behind the bustling city, keep your camera ready for scenic views of the countryside and, if weather permits, the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro. Arrive at your Amboseli lodge or tented camp in time for lunch and a brief rest. In the late afternoon, head out on your first game drive. Look out for the large herds of elephants that the park is famous for, as well as giraffes, zebras, and possible sightings of predators like lions and cheetahs. Return to your accommodation for dinner, savoring your first night under the African skies.

Rise early for a sunrise game drive, when the golden light bathes the savannah and wildlife is most active. Keep your eyes peeled for elephants feeding in the marshy areas and predators on the prowl. Afterward, return to your lodge for breakfast and some leisure time—perhaps enjoying the views of Kilimanjaro from the lounge or your private veranda. After lunch, venture out again for an afternoon game drive, exploring different sections of the park and seeking out more unique sightings. In the evening, settle in for a hearty dinner and your second overnight stay in Amboseli.

Following an early breakfast, bid farewell to Amboseli and drive eastward toward Tsavo East National Park. This scenic route showcases Kenya’s rural landscapes and local towns. Arrive at your Tsavo East lodge or camp in time for lunch. In the afternoon, set off on a game drive in one of the oldest and largest national parks in Kenya. Tsavo East’s red volcanic soil often coats elephants, giving them a characteristic reddish hue. Watch for prides of lions, buffalos, and various bird species like the lilac-breasted roller. As dusk approaches, return for dinner and an overnight stay at your Tsavo East accommodation.

After breakfast, enjoy a brief morning game drive in Tsavo East if time allows. Then, journey to neighbouring Tsavo West National Park. Although adjacent, the terrain differs significantly—Tsavo West is known for its volcanic hills, dense vegetation, and dramatic lava flows. Check in at your Tsavo West lodge or camp and have lunch. Later, embark on an afternoon game drive. Don’t miss a visit to Mzima Springs, where a viewing platform allows you to observe hippos and crocodiles underwater. In the evening, return for dinner under the star-filled skies of Tsavo West and your overnight stay.

Rise early for your final Tsavo West game drive. If you’re lucky, you may encounter leopards or other nocturnal creatures heading to their resting spots. Return for breakfast and prepare for your journey to Mombasa on Kenya’s coast. Arrive by mid to late afternoon, checking into your beach resort. After days of safari adventure, enjoy a relaxing evening by the Indian Ocean, dipping your feet in the warm waters and indulging in fresh seafood for dinner.

Today is yours to spend at leisure. Unwind on the pristine beaches, sunbathe by the pool, or explore the vibrant Swahili culture of Mombasa. Optional activities can include a historical tour of Fort Jesus and the Old Town, a dhow cruise on the Indian Ocean, or snorkeling and diving excursions. Return to your resort in the evening to savor tropical cuisine, watch the sunset over the sea, and spend a peaceful night on the coast.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your beach resort. Depending on your travel schedule, you may have time for one last stroll along the shoreline or a bit of souvenir shopping. Check out by midday and transfer to Moi International Airport in Mombasa for your onward flight or other travel arrangements, marking the end of a memorable journey that combined Kenya’s majestic wildlife parks with the coastal charm of the Indian Ocean.

Our holiday was coordinated by Beverly Akivaga. This lady is a legend, she can do it all. When my wife and I were hoping to combine a business trip with a 30th Anniversary holiday through Kenya (the place of our honeymoon) and Tanzania, we wanted to use an African owned business. We were recommended to try African Hartebeest.
