Overview

The Ark is one of Kenya’s more unusual hotels, built literally in the style of Noah’s Ark, and is beautifully situated overlooking a waterhole in the heart of Aberdare National Park. This triple-storey hotel has 60 comfortable cabins, so it’s fairly large and best suited for those who enjoy mixing with fellow travellers. The drawcard here is its position – this game-rich reserve has a staggering diversity of wildlife that is drawn to the waterhole. At night, floodlights are switched on so viewing can continue after dark from the comfort of the lounges, dining room and multi-level decks..

The lodge

The Ark has a unique design, with a rustic yet elegant log-cabin feel throughout the spacious guest areas on the third level, which consist of an airy dining room, a cosy bar and two comfortable lounges. The appeal here is the choice of viewing decks on all floors – some are open-air, while others are sheltered, offering superb views over the waterhole regardless of the weather. Be sure to spend time in the bunker-style photographic hide at the water’s edge.

The rooms

Sixty cabins are set out across the top three floors, running along either side of the hotel, with wonderful views of the surrounding forest and waterhole. They range in size from singles to twins or doubles, and family rooms with three beds – all are en-suite with a shower, and are fairly compact but very comfortable. If you don’t want to miss the nocturnal activity, an optional buzzer lets you know when animals are present at the floodlit waterhole.

Activities

Game drives take place in Aberdare National Park, where you can expect to see a wide variety of wildlife – the densely forested mountain slopes are home to colobus monkey and several other primate species, together with rarities like giant forest hog and bongo antelope. Lower-lying areas support large herds of elephant and buffalo, black rhino, lion, leopard and good numbers of plains game. Guided hikes, fishing trips and excursions to nearby places of interest can also be arranged.
