Depart Nairobi early in the morning, leaving behind the bustling city as you head north toward the Samburu region. The drive reveals a changing landscape—from the central highlands dotted with tea and coffee plantations to the arid plains of northern Kenya. Arrive at Samburu National Reserve in time for lunch and a short rest. Later in the afternoon, set out on your first game drive, where you may spot Samburu’s special “Northern Five”—the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and the gerenuk (the long-necked antelope). Settle into your lodge or tented camp by evening, savor a hearty dinner, and relax under the starry skies.
Awake to the sounds of nature and depart for an early morning game drive, capturing wildlife at its most active. The Ewaso Nyiro River flows through Samburu, attracting elephants, lions, and other animals seeking water in this semi-arid region. Keep your eyes peeled for predators such as cheetahs and leopards, often seen resting in the shade or perched atop rocks scanning for prey. Return to your accommodation for lunch and a midday rest before heading out again in the late afternoon. As dusk settles, return to camp for dinner, recounting the day’s adventures around a campfire or in the dining area.
After an early breakfast, bid farewell to Samburu and drive south to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. En route, you’ll pass through the verdant foothills of Mount Kenya. Arrive at Ol Pejeta in time for lunch at your lodge or tented camp. In the afternoon, embark on a game drive, with a highlight being the black rhino sanctuary—Ol Pejeta is renowned for its conservation efforts and is home to a significant population of rhinos. You can also visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary (time permitting) to learn about chimpanzee rescue and rehabilitation. Later, return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay within the conservancy.
Depart Ol Pejeta after breakfast and journey toward the Great Rift Valley, descending into one of the world’s most spectacular geological features. Arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park by midday, checking into your lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon, head out on a game drive along the shores of Lake Nakuru, where seasonal flamingo gatherings sometimes paint the water a shimmering pink. The park is also a stronghold for both black and white rhinoceroses, and you may see lions or leopards lurking in the nearby woodlands. Conclude the day with dinner at your lodge, overlooking the lake or surrounding parkland.
After an early breakfast, depart Lake Nakuru and continue your drive along the floor of the Great Rift Valley to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Arrive in time for lunch at your Masai Mara lodge or tented camp. In the late afternoon, embark on your first Mara game drive, venturing into rolling grasslands and acacia-dotted plains teeming with wildlife. Look out for giraffes, zebras, elephants, and the iconic big cats—lions, cheetahs, and leopards—often seen on the prowl. Before nightfall, return to your lodge, enjoy a sumptuous dinner, and settle in for a peaceful evening surrounded by nature’s nocturnal sounds.
Rise before dawn for an optional hot air balloon safari (additional cost) or set out on a morning game drive. The Masai Mara is famed for its year-round abundant wildlife, and if visiting between July and October, you may witness the Great Migration crossing the Mara River—an unforgettable natural spectacle of wildebeests and zebras braving crocodile-infested waters. Pause for a picnic lunch or return to camp during the heat of the day. Your afternoon game drive offers another chance to spot the Big Five, as well as hyenas, jackals, and numerous bird species. Conclude the day at your lodge for dinner and another night under the Mara’s endless skies.
Breakfast, then gather your belongings for the journey back to Nairobi. Arrive by mid to late afternoon, where you’ll either be dropped off at your city hotel or taken to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departure flight.
