Spend time tracking gorillas through the thick misty forested slopes of the ancient Virunga Mountaints and spend an hour in their company. Your accommodation is at the Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge on the edge of the Volcanoes National Park where clients can trek to see the mountain Gorilla in its wild habitat.

Day by Day Itinerary

  • Day 1: Kigali – Volcanoes National Park

    On arrival, you will be met by a driver and driven to Ruhengeri which is approximately two hours away. On arrival a late lunch will be served at Sabyinyo Silverback lodge which has a scenic view of the Virunga Volcanoes, of the Volcanoes National Park. Afternoon at leisure to settle in and acclimatize and perhaps an afternoon guided bird walk in the surrounds of the lodge. Dinner and overnight at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.

  • Day 2: In search of the Gorilla Families

    After breakfast, depart by road to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters. Here you will be allocated a guide for one of the habituated Mountain Gorilla families and given a safety briefing. You will then be taken by vehicle to a starting point, to commence your gorilla trek in the forest. The amount of time spent walking depends on where the gorillas are located on that day. Once the family is sighted you will spend a maximum of one hour in their company as they entertain you with their acrobatic antics and cacophony of chest beating and grunts. After this magical wildlife experience, return to your vehicle and start you journey back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon visit the serene lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo. Dinner and overnight at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.

  • Day 3: In Search of the Golden Monkeys

    After breakfast at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, embark on a trek in search of the endangered golden monkey. Observe these playful creatures in their natural habitat, before visiting the Korisoke Reserch Centre, founded by Conservationist, Dian Fossey, and learn about the ongoing work for the protection of the gorillas. You will later on do a village walk which gives a fascinating insight into life in rural Rwanda. Overnight at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.

  • Day 4: Kigali

    Depart after breakfast for Kigali in time for your return flight.
